Glass Schedule: 6 weeks beginning
May 5 - June 16 Fee: $250 ($225 for CCftA members) + materials fee Class 0: Beginner students come to my studio to get counsel on picking out their projects and how to select glass. I will also give them a materials sheet at this time. Class 1: Making patterns for a stained glass panel. Students learn about design basics and proper, balanced glass selection, how to set up the design for tracing, how to mark the pattern pieces for mapping, color code, and orientation to the glass, how to use pattern shears, and how to properly store patterns and working copies. Students are instructed each class to start cleaning up their area 15 minutes before the end of class. Class ends promptly at the hour specified (Teacher needs her 1 hour break). Class 2: Students learn basic glass cutting (straight lines and curves) on scrap glass. They will be instructed in the proper use and storage of glass cutters, running pliers, breaker/grozer, straight edge, marking pen, cutting surface, and glass grinder. They are also taught basics of how to handle glass so that we avoid cutting hands instead of glass. Also, safety glasses are required in any glass in which anyone anywhere in the room is cutting glass! Class 3: This class concentrates on perfecting glass cutting skills and proper fitting of the glass to the pattern. Students will be shown how to set up their working copies on boards. Class 4: A working class in which we continue to concentrate on honing cutting skills and fitting the glass to the pattern properly. Class 5: Students are encouraged to be finished with cutting and fitting by the end of this class (not necessary if the student is continuing on to the next 6-week session). New students will be taught to foil and do the final fit on the glass in preparation for soldering. Students with small projects or who work quickly will be able to start soldering in this class. Class 6: Students will learn proper soldering techniques and how to finish off a project with zinc edging. They will also be instructed in the proper clean up and finishing polish of their projects. |
